Communicating progress on DFO's Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI) activities

We are seeking feedback on a proposed approach for sharing Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s (DFO) annual progress and results, as part of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI). We are asking you to provide your feedback to help us shape what this will look like.

Let's Talk Pacific Salmon is an online engagement tool that complements in-person/virtual targeted engagement and will not replace in-person and/or virtual targeted engagement with First Nations, Indigenous organizations, other partners, and key stakeholders.

Why are we conducting this survey?

We want to learn about the kind of information that Canadians want to know about Pacific salmon and on Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative annual results as we prepare DFO’sPSSI Year in Review” website.

How engagement will support implementation

Feedback from this engagement will be considered in the development of public reporting products, including the proposed DFO PSSI Year in Review” website. This will help in improving our transparency in communicating results of Pacific salmon/PSSI activities.

Communicating DFO’s Pacific salmon results story

PSSI was launched in June 2021, with the goal of stemming historic declines in key Pacific salmon stocks through rebuilding and conservation efforts in collaboration with others. The PSSI is a transformative horizontal initiative that spans the department.

DFO Vision: Working together to conserve and restore wild Pacific salmon stocks and their ecosystems, for those who depend on them. Ultimate Result: Priority Pacific salmon stocks are conserved and restored through targeted action in collaboration with partners Pillars: • Conservation and Stewardship, Theme: Habitat monitoring and assessment, Integrated planning and restoration • Salmon Enhancement, Theme: Enhancement – conservation focused, Enhancement – harvest focused • Harvest transformation, Theme: Harvest transformation – Indigenous, harvest transformation – commercial, harvest transformation – recreational • Integration and collaboration, Theme: integration and coordination, collaboration and partnerships Guiding principles: Indigenous reconciliation, innovation solutions, prioritization, enhancement transparency, data and trust, partnership and collaborationDFO's Pacific Salmon Roadmap

At this time, the Pacific salmon work we carry out is delivered by many programs across the department, each with their own approach to reporting and tracking results and data.

The Department performed an internal Pacific salmon evaluation in 2021 which resulted in recommending that we implement a performance measurement strategy for activities in support of Pacific salmon. We have committed to consolidating and reviewing performance indicators and results for Pacific salmon overall, including PSSI, to provide a measurable, holistic view of our Pacific salmon activities and programs.

DFO does not yet have a consolidated public platform to share results of Pacific salmon/PSSI activities. Therefore, to enhance transparency on Pacific salmon/PSSI progress, we are planning to develop a public facing "PSSI Year in Review" website. Engagements such as this one will help us shape it.
