Pacific Salmon Data Portal - First Look

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) is seeking your input to guide the development of the Pacific Salmon Data Portal, a web-based data sharing application, which is being built as part of the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative (PSSI).

The Pacific Salmon Data Portal is an Open Government initiative that was created to improve access, transparency, and usability of Pacific Salmon Data for the benefits of Canadians. The Portal will transform user’s data experiences through interactive and engaging tools that will improve the accessibility and transparency of departmental data. This means hearing from you to better understand the use and value of this tool and how it has enhanced your data experience.

Whether you work in the field or have an interest in Pacific salmon research, policies, and programs of any kind, we want to hear from you.

For more information on the Data Portal project, visit the previous engagement page.

Help us Make the Portal

DFO is inviting the Pacific salmon community to provide feedback on a pre-release version of the Portal. This version is designed to demonstrate some of the core features of the portal with a limited number of previously released Open Government datasets. As you explore the portal, we encourage you to think of additional features and datasets you would like to see in the full release and make note of any bugs you run in to. In the survey below, you will have the opportunity to identify these and provide any comments on the Portal. Your feedback will be valuable in informing our content and feature roadmaps that will lead to our full release.

Key Highlights to Look out For

We want to highlight a few key features of the pre-release Portal which can be explored:

Data Product Catalogue

The catalogue is the primary discovery tool on the Portal. Available data products (datasets, data visualizations, etc.) can be found there.

Data Quality Scores

Each catalogue entry includes a data quality score. This score will give you a snapshot of the quality of the dataset from "meets minimum standard" to "exceptional data quality", which can help inform your analysis. All datasets on the portal must meet a mandatory minimum data quality standard determined by our data quality tests outlined on our data quality overview page. We are continuing to develop our data quality program; and your feedback is appreciated on our current methodology.

Business Glossary

The business glossary can be used to find common business terms used by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in the management of Pacific salmon to get more context into how to use Pacific salmon datasets and related products and to better understand the data you are exploring on the data portal.

Portal Accounts Sign in

As we expand the portal, more features will be added to user accounts. You can use the following log in information to access the user account pages on the pre-release portal.
